We work toward a future with 100% clean energy

We work toward a future with 100% clean energy. Currently, the world is dependent on carbon-based baseload energy. That is why our goal is to construct and deploy 1 000 SMRs. Together they will produce close to 500 TWh clean electricity annually. If successful, we will avoid 0.5 gigatons of C02 - or 1% of global emissions - every year.

Our lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs) will be used for electricity, heating, and industrial applications such as production of hydrogen, HVO, syngas, and biochar. By targeting otherwise hard-to-abate sectors we contribute to decarbonization throughout the industrial value chain.

Our history

Blykalla AB was founded in 2013 by Janne Wallenius, Peter Szakalos, and Jesper Ejenstam as a spin-off from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, where Janne Wallenius has carried out research on design and safety analysis on lead-cooled reactor systems since 1996.

The research brought together insights from fast reactor design, transient analysis, corrosion and materials science, nuclear fuel development, lead coolant chemistry, radiation damage, severe accident analysis, nuclear construction, and operation of nuclear power plants to create a unique reactor design that provides safe and sustainable baseload energy.

Talking about the future

Blykalla is the proud host of an annual nuclear power industry gathering. We bring together key stakeholders such as politicians, top officials, nuclear power experts, industry executives, and academia to discuss the most prominent challenges and solutions that face the nuclear power industry, and especially SMRs, in Sweden each year.

Our latest event took place in January 2024 inside the historic reactor hall R1. Its inaugural speech was held by the Minister for Climate and the Environment, Romina Pourmokhtari. Stay tuned for updates on our next event.
